I began working with Connou in October 2022 as one of 2 UX Designers. Connou is a small start-up app based on students who can connect with each other through the app.

The Problem:

How to gain universities and users to sign up to the app? How to develop the app design further within the parameters already set?

The Goal:

Elevate the app to be more pleasing to Gen Z, making sure accessibility needs are met and research new features for future implementation.

Project Overview

The Product:

Connou is an App Store product where universities sign up with the company and allow their students to connect through interests and moods. I came into the team at a time when the design was still in the beginning stages, and worked with other designers and devs team to deliver a new design with their design system and research new features.

Takeaways

Impact:

The app has been received well by students, having an 8% penetration rate in the first week. With the new features more universities have gained interest and since the first redesign, connections within the app have increased by 12%.. The community feature was shown to universities and received positive feedback and was noted as a key motivation to join Connou.

What I Learned:

As it is a start-up, I was giving design decision responsibilities quickly and I was able to implement accessible needs within the existing design system early on. I work within a cross functional team, working with marketing and sales teams. I gained experience working with developers and software teams to implement my designs.
